Growing City had its start on Savary Island in British Columbia.
After founder Lisa von Sturmer spent a week on the island with friends – where composting and recycling are mandatory – she was shocked by the huge impact composting had on the group’s waste.
When she returned back to work in Vancouver, she was dismayed to discover just how much organic waste was being unnecessarily thrown in the trash. When she tried to find a company that could help her office set up an organics recycling program, she was incredibly disappointed to not find one.
So she decided to create a service that was simple, clean, convenient and professional enough for a corporate office environment.
Growing City was designed with *your* office in mind – we know you’re busy, we know you need quality metrics, and we know that your office has a professional aesthetic that needs to be maintained. With Growing City, there’s no more wasting staff’s time trying to organize a recycling or organics program – and no more ugly plastic bins in the office, either.

Positivity
If it can’t be composted, then in all likelihood we can take it in one of our other recycling streams. From plastic cup lids, styrofoam, soft plastics, plastic bags bottles and glass, to monitors, electronics and e-waste – if there’s a way to avoid it ending up in the landfill, we’re passionate about taking the steps to ensure we make that happen :)
Joy

All-natural Cleaners
All our cleaners are 100% natural and eco-safe. This includes our own Growing City Pure Clean Vapour – a synthetic chemical free cleaner we had made with a local aroma therapist that smells great and is completely non toxic! (Also cleans stainless steel like a dream)
Clients can purchase this for themselves from our Client Shop!
95% Paper Free
All of our invoices, newsletters and Diversion Updates are emailed to our clients. We also have a no-email printing policy.
Ethically and Locally Manufactured Bins
All our premium bins are Simple Human bins. We specifically chose this brand because of their dedication to having ethically made products and reduced packaging.
Our totes are made by Rehrig Pacific here in Canada and the US. We use as much recycled and reused materials as possible in all our bins.
Banned Water Bottles
Plastic and single-serving cups and bottles have been banned from the Growing City work environments – that includes our trucks!
Community Events
Growing City regularly partners with a different community organization to promote and participate in a local sustainable event.
